Sunday afternoon broiled-over in Sacramento as temperatures rose to hot-as-hell digits while hundreds of people blistered their way toward the Tower Stage at the LAUNCH Music Festival to watch Surfer Blood.  Sporting deep-colored Bermuda shorts, a button up cotton t-shirt and wayfarers, guitarist and lead vocalist John Paul Pitts stepped up to the mic stand and welcomed the crowd with “hello, we’re Surfer Blood” to start-up the show.

Surfer Blood’s energetic, upbeat music magically lifts the mood and brings on the fun. Imagine sitting at a beach with longboard surfboards jutting up from the sand, hot bodies rockin’ old-fashioned swimsuits, and in that vintage filter you have the essence of Surfer Blood.  Today, the gentlemen of Surfer Blood find themselves playing on the same stages as bands like the Pixies, quite a leap from the band that originated out of a dorm room.  Blood’s 2010 album titled Astro Coast (with indie record label Kanine Records) opened doors and provided some much needed opportunities for these guys.

Pitts, guitarist Thomas Fekete, bassist Kevin Williams, and drummer Tyler Schwarz have been riding the wave of stardom and beating back the choppy sea soup to hit the lip all the way to the top. The fans of Sacramento were soaking in it all in, staying with the Bloods as they played well into the evening.  Pitts confidently led the entertaining show that was filled with loud bass, hints of profound whammy bar, and dashes of screamo vocals. With those smooth, poppy, upbeat vocals, Surfer Blood is the modern day Beach Boys.
